I recently watched The Help for about the third time. It is a great movie, but one that leaves me with bitter/sweet emotions. One of the most touching parts of the movie to me is when Aibileen is talking to little Mae Mobley, telling her to always remember, “you is kind, you is smart, you is important”. Words she wanted her to remember throughout her life.

Words…a powerful build up…a powerful break down.

Millions of dollars are spent yearly on motivational books and speakers. There are some brilliant minds that give great advice. Their words are meant to build us up, encourage, spur us on, give us hope, etc.

Maya Angelou was an amazing woman whose life could have taken a very different road. She created a list of things she learned through life…

I’ve learned that no matter what happens, or how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow. (one day at a time!!! sometimes one minute!!)

I’ve learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights. (Yep)

I’ve learned that regardless of your relationship with your parents, you’ll miss them when they’re gone from your life. (So, so true, if I could have just one more day…)

I’ve learned that making a “living” is not the same thing as making a “life.” (Agree!)

I’ve learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance. (And when we mess that up, He gives us more…along with mercy and grace)

I’ve learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision. (Pray then Be still and listen before acting…)

 People love a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back. I’ve learned that I still have a lot to learn. (Amen!!)

I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.   (Good or Bad…it’s true)

While Dr. Angelou’s words are true and many hold powerful messages, God’s Word  is the number one source of motivation. It is  filled with treasures of wisdom and knowledge(Colossians 2:3) to live by. When we have God’s Word in our hearts, it calms the doubt. It will help us to hold steady in the difficult times of life. Comfort us when we may be “welcomed” but not really “wanted”. He never leaves our side. He not only welcomes us but he unconditionally loves, wants and desires us.

One day last week, as I was waking from the fogginess of sleep…I opened my eyes and the sun was just coming up…the below was my view out the window…God, was saying “Get Up…this is the day I’ve made and whatever comes your way, I am right beside you!!”

As a song by Hawk Nelson sings…words can build you  up, words can break us down…”.
But know, know, know God’s Words build you up always!! He’s our example of how our words should be!!
